“Ulysses” Reader Group

The “Ulysses” Reader Group project will begin in January and conclude on Bloomsday in June, 2025. All session, except for May, will be held in the Norton Room. The May session will be in the Castle Keep. Group leaders are Joyce East, Mary Wilber, and Chris Horan. 
The monthly discussions will be held at the Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Library.  Each meeting will focus on three episodes in the novel.  The first meeting will last 3 hours and will include an introduction to the book.  All meetings will have treats and coffee.

Meeting Schedule & Info

First Meeting:  January 11, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The meeting will include the introduction and a discussion of episodes 1-3. A light lunch will be provided.

Second Meeting:  February 1, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., episodes 4-6

Third Meeting:  March 1, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., episodes 7-9

Fourth Meeting:  April 5, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., episodes 10-12

Fifth Meeting:  May 3, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., episodes 13-15

Sixth Meeting:  June 14, 2025 (Bloomsday) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., episodes 16-18 (the extra hour will allow a full discussion of the episodes as well as time to celebrate our achievement).

Text: Any text of Ulysses will be fine.  If you need to buy a copy, we recommend the Random House edition, published in 1934 by Modern Library.  This edition includes materials related to the court case banning the novel in America, and a letter from James Joyce to Bennet Cerf (of Random House).
