Meet the lecturer – Erik Berg
Erik Berg is an award-winning historian and writer with a special interest in the early 20th century Southwest. He is a frequent presenter at the Arizona History Convention and his work has appeared in the Journal of Arizona History, Arizona Highways, and Sedona Magazine, as well as in several books. His original paper on the history of Arizona’s wine industry won the Goldwater Award for best paper at the 2016 Arizona History Convention and his extensive article in the fall 2018 issue of the Journal of Arizona History was the first detailed account of Arizona’s long, but little known, wine history. He was a contributor to Jenelle Bonifield’s book, AZ Uncorked: The Arizona Wine Guide, and wrote the brief history section for the Arizona Wine Growers Association website. In researching the history of wine in Arizona, Berg got to know many of the current winemakers and came to appreciate of the growing importance of the wine industry to a number of Arizona communities.

Vintage Arizona: The Little-Known History of Wine and Winemaking in Arizona
Arizona’s wine industry is booming. Starting from almost nothing in the 1980s, there are now over a hundred wineries and vineyards across the state with more starting every year. Despite the youth of the current industry, there is a long and largely forgotten history of wine-making in Arizona dating back some two hundred years. Berg’s lively presentation will trace the history of Arizona wine from its earliest origins to the present. Topics will include fact and fiction regarding Spanish Colonial winemaking, the popularity of wine in Arizona during the frontier territorial days, and the death of early efforts during Prohibition. It will also explain how an unlikely band of aspiring winemakers created the modern Arizona wine industry and how a stubborn lawyer of Irish ancestry ensured it would survive. Some of the wines discussed may be dry, but this interesting and often amusing presentation certainly won’t be.
Meet the Vendors
Birds and Barrels Vineyards
Birds and Barrels Vineyards was founded by Chad and Monica Preston in 2015 with the goal of crafting ultra-premium Arizona wines. Family owned and operated, Birds and Barrels takes pride in every aspect of production from the quality of grapes grown on site to the hand harvesting, pressing and crafting of the wine. In the age of mechanized mass production, quality is often over-looked. Birds and Barrels is turning back the clock by producing only high-quality, hand-crafted wine.
Located in beautiful Willcox, Arizona, Birds and Barrels Vineyards is surrounded by majestic mountain vistas and gently rolling hills with grain fields, vineyards and orchards.

GenuWine Wine Bar
GenuWine Arizona is owned by Emily Rieve & Lindsey Schoenemann; two former Junior High teachers who followed their dream of opening a wine bar. Emily and Lindsey met while teaching 7th grade math & science in Gilbert, Arizona. They quickly became best friends and found that they work best when they collaborate together.
The pair decided to open GenuWine after Emily encountered similar technology on a trip to France. Their passion for supporting local wine led them to connecting with Arizona winemakers, and those wines are showcased in the self-serve machines.

Desert Rock Winery and Distillery
Desert Rock Winery and Distillery was founded in 2006 by winemaker, Paul J. Hoffman, to produce and sell fine wines from Napa and Sonoma, CA.
In 2006, Paul had the opportunity to partner with a few renowned winegrowers and harvest grapes from their vineyards to make wine of his own. These wines represent unique parcels of pristine vineyards in Sonoma County farmed with A+ quality in mind. In addition to the vineyard and winery influence. Knowing these vineyards could only produce a small amount of wine, Paul decided to create multiple lines of wine including, Curveball, putting different appellations, varietals, winemaking techniques and taste profiles together to represent the best of the vintage. The Rock n Roll infused brand, Headbanger, launched in 2010 followed by 401K in 2011.
In 2015 the company decided to move all of it’s winemaking operations to the thriving Scottsdale, Arizona market. Here, they opened The Desert Rock Urban Winery, Tasting Room, and Wine Education Center. The goal was to utilize 16 years of winemaking experience and bring the wine country feel plus educational efforts to the nation’s fifth largest metropolitan area. He splits his time between quiet wine country setting of Sonoma Valley and energetic surroundings of Phoenix, Arizona.

Scale and Feather Meadery
Scale & Feather Meadery is owned and operated by its three owners, Tamara Chaney, Ben Chaney, and Amber DeGiso.

What is mead? Considered the oldest fermented beverage in human history, Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is made by fermenting honey. At Scale & Feather, our Mead Adventurers use over ten years of experience to make this ancient beverage in both traditional and creative new flavor profiles.
