TUCSON SPREADS ITS IRISH WINGS

Tucson Irish announced the formation and incorporation of the Tucson Irish Heritage Foundation, Inc. Our mission: “Tucsonans and those living in southern Arizona interested in collaborating to plan and implement a vision for an Irish Heritage Center that embraces Celtic cultures and peoples in the Old Pueblo”.

With more than eighteen Celtic organizations in southern Arizona, representation from nearly all these organizations help develop the foundation. The Tucson Irish Heritage Foundation is excited to bring the Celtic community together, foster collaboration, and provide social, educational and enriching cultural activities for the people of Tucson.

Tucson was founded by an Irishman named Hugo O'Conor. O’Conor is known for his work in Spanish territories of Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Among other things, in 1775 he established the presidio (fort) at what is now Tucson and named the settlement San Agustin de Toixon, a name that was later shortened and modified to its present spelling of Tucson. O’Conor’s ancestral home is in the city of Roscommon, hence the connection between the Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities Project.

The Tucson Irish Heritage Foundation, Inc., would like to take this opportunity to thank the Irish Cultural Center for sharing their knowledge and expertise in assisting with developing the Foundation. This collaboration has been vital in building community and bringing communities together! The website is available at http://tucsonirishheritage.com.
